How to Treat Split Ends?

Hair Split ends is a real problem for many women, especially those with long or dry hair. In this blog on how to treat split ends, we will be accessing the reasons behind split ends and ways on how to treat split ends.

Split ends, also known as trichoptlosis, occur when the cuticle is damaged and the inner hair layer is unraveled. The problem is, generally, common among women with long, dry, and brittle hair. It is important to note that cortex is left vulnerable to splitting when your hair is weakened by heating or coloring.

This hair problem is also caused by frequent dry blowing, excessive hair dying, insufficient hair conditioning, excess heat styling, vigorous hair brushing, overwashing hair, improper hair care, using a wrong hairbrush, and using too much of hair coloring products.

The best way to treat split ends is to trim your hair on a regular basis (every five or six weeks). It is also important for you to condition your hair with a good quality hair moisturizing conditioner every time you wash your hair (wash hair 3-4 times a month or more if there is an urgent need) to keep hair healthy and hydrated. You are also advised to make use of hair shampoos, conditioners, masks, serums, creams, mousses, and sprays that are specifically meant for treating split ends but do make sure that they suit your hair type. It is also recommended that you detangle the hair strands with a wide tooth hairbrush and avoid combing wet hair.

Once the head is clean of dandruff, it is best to protect hair with scarves (preferably silk scarf) and hats. This kind of protection is also beneficial to prevent breaking of hair. Myths about hair oils busted

Mothers, all over the world, advice their daughters to use hair oil to keep the hair grow to the fullest and look great. However, recent medical studies have suggested that hair oils do no good to the scalp and hair than just providing a relaxing massage. It was revealed that application of hair oil, in no way, was instrumental in promoting or maintaining growth and development of hair.

The studies noted that hair oil does not add shine or luster to hair and are as good as a massage for making the hair grow thicker, longer, and darker. It was also suggested that oiling hair is not effective for stopping hair fall and does not demonstrate efficacy for accelerating hair regrowth. To add to the woes, hair oils can actually attract dust and convert the hair and scalp to become breeding grounds for infections. It was also noted that hair oils are good only as scalp conditioner but only when the oil is left on the clean scalp for at least 7-8 hours at a stretch. Hair oils were found to be good only for stimulating the circulation in the scalp and helping one relax.

If you want to get any benefit from oiling hair, it is highly recommended that you apply warm oil and spread it gently and evenly to the scalp. You need to leave the oil overnight and wash it with a natural and mild shampoo by using warm water. To get optimum benefits of hair oil, you can try wrapping a towel after it has been soaked in hot water for around 15-20 minutes after a massage.
